OFF Stage: the West Village Fragments 2006

What makes an artistic movement? Passion, commitment, inspiration, perseverance, lucky breaks, outside forces, divine intervention, insanity, and then some. The beginning of a movement is often impossible to pinpoint, and NYC’s Off-Off Broadway is no exception, but 2006 is roughly the 50th anniversary of this American alternative theater. Born of the Pass-the-Hat circuit, Coffeehouse Theater, and Anti-War Protest actions, a spark of revolution turned Greenwich Village into the hot spot of artistic experimentation in the 1950s. OFF Stage marks this half-century milestone by marking its territory—a performance heritage trail.

Come, travel back to the Caffe Cino, Sheridan Square Playhouse, Judson Poets’ Theater, Circle-In-The-Square, Cherry Lane Theatre, Provincetown Playhouse, Washington Square Methodist Church, the Village Gate, Gaslight Café…even the former Women’s House of Detention. Journey down historic Greenwich Village streets with our original, multidisciplinary performance. Catch a glimpse of the “classics” of the Off-Off Broadway canon performed at (or very near) the actual sites where they premiered. Discover the artistic past of the unusual places where this movement found its heart and soul.

P.S. stick around after the tour for the ‘cast party’—a chance to relax and refresh with the project artists.
