An installed screening of performance video, historical photos and demolition footage, combined with original music and live performance, Welcome Aboard the Friendly Tripbox looks at PWP’s struggle to create and perform THE JUDSON HOUSE PROJECT against the backdrop of the buildings artistic history and preservation controversy.

In 2000, PWP presented THE JUDSON HOUSE PROJECT, a site-specific performance tour featuring over 100 artists from across all disciplines and throughout all four floors of a doomed building: Judson House. Formerly home to Judson Church’s many social programs, the Judson Gallery (site of the first Happenings), and avant-garde legends including Claes Oldenburg, Yoko Ono, Charlotte Moorman and Al Carmines, Judson House had an enormous impact on its community. As its destruction drew near, PWP knew that it was crucial to pay tribute to this cultural landmark before it met the wrecking ball.

Welcome Aboard the Friendly Tripbox (from grafitti in the original building) will take audiences back into the narrow stairways and tiny rooms, revealing the rich history PWP discovered there, now gone forever. This docu-performance will premiere in Judson’s new assembly hall, on the grounds where Judson House once stood.

Welcome Aboard the Friendly Tripbox is supported by the New York State Council on the Arts, the City of New York Department of Cultural Affairs, the Nancy Quinn Fund and the generosity of Judson Memorial Church.
